On November 12, General Sebhat Efrem, Eritrea's minister of defense, left Eritrea accompanying a military team that included a cartographer, communication officer (code operator) and an intelligence officer. The destination or the purpose of the visit is unknown: it was not announced in the state-owned media and even senior military officers are unaware. More than 90 Swedish newspapers united Thursday in publishing a joint appeal on behalf of a Swedish-Eritrean journalist held in Eritrea for eight years without trial. Dawit Isaak was arrested on September 23, 2001 after the Eritrean government's moved to shut down independent newspapers. Thursday's publication marked Isaak's brief release on November 19, 2005 - but he was arrested a few days later. The appeal calling for the release of Dawit Isaak was written by Peter Englund, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy that awards the coveted Nobel Prize for Literature.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A draft U.N. Security Council resolution calls for an arms embargo against Eritrea and travel bans and asset freezes for members of its government and military for aiding Islamist insurgents in Somalia. The resolution, obtained by Reuters on Thursday, was drafted by temporary Security Council member Uganda and has been circulated to other members of the 15-nation panel, U.N. diplomats said. The United States and other council members accuse Eritrea of supplying al Shabaab rebels with money and weapons as they fight to topple the fragile U.N.-backed transitional government of Somali President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed, the official leader of the virtually lawless Horn of Africa nation.

President Isaias Afwerki said Eritrea would not suffer from hunger and food shortages in 2010, a government website reported. Hunger levels in Eritrea are ranked among the worst in the world by humanitarian organisations, with the agriculture-based economy affected by irregular rainfall. But the president said Asmara would meet the demands of those regions hardest hit. "The Government has drawn up plans towards ensuring no-hunger situation nationwide," the state website Shabait.com reported the president as saying.

Eritrea has a deserved reputation as an arms depot for various radical and rebel groups around the world. Sri Lanka's government has accused Eritrea of providing arms to the recently defeated LTTE rebels (who fought for over two decades to partition the island nation). Now an Eritrean dissident is accusing Eritrea of supplying rebels in Yemen with weapons and ammo. Sure, it is an accusation, but the charge likely has merit.
